Wide smiles, hearty laughs and soaring chest bumps could be seen across Henry Stadium on Monday afternoon.

It marked the first day of spring football for North Carolina, and the players were thrilled just to be back in uniform — even if it was only in helmets and gym shorts.

An earlier version of this story stated that silver was not part of UNC's colors. Silver is actually a licensed color of the University. The Daily Tar Heel apologies for the error.

The North Carolina men's basketball team isn't the only squad on campus that can sport silver.

“This is somewhat typical of what a recruiting class in future years would look like,” Davis said. “The first couple years you have to recruit on need. … In this particular class we signed someone at every position except quarterback.”

Fair or unfair, conference strength is largely judged on how a particular conference performs in bowl games.

And so far this season for the Atlantic Coast Conference, bowl season hasn't been very kind.

In the ACC's first appearances in bowl action this year, North Carolina and Boston College both fell yesterday, putting the conference in an early 0-2 hole.

Urban Meyer's decision to step down as the head coach of the University of Florida was more than just a little shocking.

Here was a man near or at the top of the college football coaching profession (two BCS national championships in his five years) who had depth chart more stocked than Martha Stewart's pantry.

CHARLOTTE — Charles Brown and Quan Sturdivant remained on their knees, as if rising would somehow make it more real.

Maybe if they didn't have to get up, they wouldn't have to face the offsides penalty that North Carolina incurred with 1:55 to play, giving Pittsburgh a fresh set of downs, and ultimately the win in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, 19-17.
